Background
Everything in life is simple, black and white, so to speak. At least, that’s what I was thinkin’ back before I saw Them.
I was born in 1840 in the grand ‘ole state of Virginia. Me and my three brothers, we faced raisin’ on our own when Pa died in a shoot out. I was only five then so I don’t remember him much. I was a cattle hand by the age of ten and met me a rustler. He learned me how to fight with a gun and steal cattle for profit.
I met my wife when I was seventeen. Ida was the sweetest thing I’d ever saw. We married a year later before she birthed our son, Billy. She died givin’ him life. It was the most bravest thing I ever saw. After that, Billy and me, you see, we just spent our time going through with me workin’ lumber and cattle in the Dakota Territory. That’s where I met Them.
I was twenty-five, my Billy was seven when we were part of the most strangest thing that ever happened. See now, the whole town went dumb! That’s right, no one could speak a lick. Some people tried writing but not all them folks had been learned letters. People were scared, including my Billy. Then the deaths started. People’s hearts were being taken out clean from their chest! How do I know? Billy was the seventh. I seen the whole thing. They took his heart and he couldn’t scream none.
From then on, I’d work my way around to get money and all, but I was watching for those things. I came across one town that was mute but there was some guy there who actually knew what in tarnation was goin’ on! He said they were “The Gentlemen.” Let me tell ya, ain’t nothin’ gentle about Them. So I was learned all that could be learned about them. I betcha I coulda killed them, too, if I hadn’t gotten shot.
See, I’d decided to visit my brother at the OK Corral but when I got there, turns out he’d been caught stealin’ cattle. I’m not sure how all the shootin’ went. It’s kinda blurry. All I remember is the bang…
