Samhain Ritual
Adorn the circle with autumnal flowers, branches, pine cones and small pumpkins. There should be flowers on the alter and the alter cloth and candles should be orange. Have the coveners bring a small piece of paper which they have written a weakness or bad habit they would like to lose. Opening ritual is performed, followed by the full or new moon ritual if appropriate. Bell is wrung three times. Priestess: "Now is a time of change. Now do we leave the light and enter the darkness. Yet we do so gladly, for we know it to be the turning of the mighty wheel of the year. "At this time of the year, the gates between the worlds are open. We call upon our ancestors, our loved ones, to pass through and join us at this time. We invite them to join in celebration with those they love." Bell is rung seven times. Covener: "We are at the crack of time, for this day belongs neither to the old year or the new. And there is no distinction between the years. So there is no distinction between the worlds. Those we have known and loved in ages past are free to return to us here in this meeting place. From this reuniting, gather strength. Know that there i no end and no beginning. All is a continuous turning, a spiraling dance that goes and returns yet ever moves on. In that turning, Samhain is the sacred festival marking the end of summer and the beginning of winter, a time to celebrate, a time to welcome the God as he starts his journey down the tunnel of darkness that bears the light of the Goddess at the end." Priestess: "The wheel turns." All: "And turns again." Priestess: "Farewell to our Goddess-summer, she draws to a close." All: "Welcome to our God-winter, he sets his food upon the path. Hail and farewell." Priestess: "Gracious Goddess, we thank you for the joys of summer. We thank you for the bounty, the fruits, he crops, the harvest. Return again as the Wheel turns and be with us once more. Even as the Lord accepts the mantle, walk with him through the darkness to come again into the light." She then places the cauldron in the center of the circle and lights a small fire (if indoors, this may be done in a fireplace.) The coven walks deosil around the Circle, first stopping at the alter to honor, then to the cauldron to burn their small paper. The closing ritual is done. |
